CASTOR
The Cosmological Advanced Survey Telescope for Optical and uv Research (CASTOR) is a proposed Canadian-led mission that would image the Universe at ultraviolet (UV) and blue-optical wavelengths.
Overview
CASTOR (Cosmological Advanced Survey Telescope for Optical and UV Research) is a proposed Canadian-led space telescope designed to provide high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy in the ultraviolet (UV) and blue-optical wavelengths. The mission is planned as a flagship Canadian space astronomy project and is expected to complement major observatories such as Euclid, the Roman Space Telescope and the Vera Rubin Observatory.
With a 1-meter primary mirror, CASTOR is designed to achieve image quality comparable to the Hubble Space Telescope while surveying areas of the sky approximately 100 times larger in a single observation. Its scientific objectives include studying galaxy evolution, dark matter, dark energy, star formation, exoplanets, and transient astronomical phenomena.
Pipeline development
Designed and developed software for generating synthetic telescope observations, supporting the optimisation of CASTOR’s observing strategy. This work helped assess the mission’s ability to detect transient astronomical events, such as supernovae, and maximise the scientific return of time-domain surveys.
